“Cabbage”

Not knowing exactly what I was doing, but knowing that you could enlarge an image and draw it more accurately by using a grid as a reference, I drew out a grid on the paper, and then proceeded to draw the whole cabbage.

When that was complete, I thought, “I have these squares on my drawing, maybe I will paint each square individually, using different colors but matching tonal values.  I had seen this done in “watercolor quilts”.  I was very excited at how well this first painting of mine turned out.

I recently watched an old Jane Wyman film called, “So Big”.  One of the re-occurring lines in the film was:  “Cabbages are beautiful.”
